Creative Printmaking Etching
and Relief, with Jenny Peterson.

days 10am-4pm). Cost: $195 ($175 concession) Experience
two fundamental approaches to making prints with
Intaglio (etching, softground, aquatint) and Relief
(block) printing.
The word ‘intaglio’ means engraved
or incised design. When used in relation to printed
images this tells us ink has been applied to the
recesses of the printing plate and transferred onto
paper under pressure. When ink is applied and transferred
as a surface or ‘relief’ layer it can give dynamic
contrast to the print. Jenny will assist you to
make your own original etchings using metal plates
and copper sulphate solution. Students will learn
the whole process of designing, processing and printing
images with specialist press equipment. During the
first two sessions the main image is developed as
a black and white design with zinc plate. In
subsequent sessions other materials including aluminum,
lino and scrap metals can be used to create shaped
and coloured layers. Beginners and experienced artists
progress at their own pace to create small editions
and one-off pieces for folio development. Bring
two ideas around the same theme as a starting point
for your own artworks. This allows for technical
practice and provides more choice for development
as the work progresses.
Bring a basic tool kit of scissors,
knife, pencil, notebook, masking tape, apron or
old shirt, disposable gloves. Bring your lunch,
tea and coffee is provided. (Fees include zinc plate,
some Arches printmaking paper, all workshop consumables.
Extra materials can be purchased as required.
